Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory proposed by Abraham Maslow in 1943. The hierarchy illustrates what humans need in order to survive but also be happy. It develops in stages from basic necessities that are essential to things that complete us as people. these stages are; Psychological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem, Self-Actualization. Using this heiracrchy i will analyse how media products are mareted in order to make the consumer feel like they are essential needs rather than luxurious wants.

NME Front Cover

Colour: Red, Black and white basic style. It's classy, stylish and gives the impression its 'the' magazine to have. White background makes the black stand out as well as the straplines. The contrasting colours enhance the writing, white writing stands out against the red background. The bright red represents anger which could mean this magazine has attitude and is fiery.
Design: Main lettering is bold and recognizeable, the main image is the focus of the cover suggesting only to look at this image. The main storylines annotate the picture and tell the reader that this section of writing is to do with the main image. The main image slightly overlaps the name of the magazine but not enough to make it unrecognizeable, suggests that this star is important enough to have his picture over the title of the magazine. The fonts used a simple and clear to read, the font is larger for the main story than the other cover lines. Also the name of the artist each cover line is about is bolder than what is beneath it. This makes the names stand out and therefore readers will recognize the names on the cover and buy it. The clear font suggests this magazine is simple and easy to read and straight to the point. there is no fancy complicated fonts that take away the edge of the words actually written.
Images: The main image is a long shot of My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way. This shows what genre the magazine is about, punk and rock. He represets something different that stands out from the crowd which is illustrated in his clothing which stands out against the background. The dark tones represent him as someone with a darker side and a bit of attitude which appeals to their target audience
Pose, Style, Hair, Make-up: He is leaning slightly to the right with an expressionless face staring at the camera, he has his hands in his pockets. this connotes that he doesn't care what people think and adds to his punky image by not smiling, the photo portrays him as someone with attitude to the reader which attracts their target audience
How Are Words Used On The Cover: Title has the biggest font making it stand out amongst the rest and making it recognizeable. Straplines are stating the main features inside the magazine and listing bands in the magazine which draws in fans to buy the magazine. All the names of bands are in bold writing making them stand out on the cover. Glancing at it you will be able to see the names of the bands that are in the magazine and notice exactly what and who is inside it. The bold fonts make it stand out on the shelf of a shop which catches the audiences eye.
Language: Give quotes from the main artist which informs the reader what they will be talking about grabbing their attention. It also poses questions to the reader about a couple of the artists featured which arouses curiousity within the reader who wants to know the answers.
Overall Impression - How Effective Is The Front Cover: It tells you exactly what is inside the magazine with very little writing, the text stands out and makes the cover eye catching. Appeals to people interested in Rock, punk music and the main image represents the image of this genre, attitude. The bands featured correspond with the genre of music which attracts more of this group of people. People interested in other genres of music are not targeted and the magazine does not represent their interests which makes it unappealing to them, this gives the magazine a more exclusive feel as it is very specialised, it has its own image making it original and cool
